Kera Minerals Review

Are you looking for a natural relaxer? Well, this may or may not be the product for you. First off, it is not all natural. Secondly, it does contain chemicals. Third point, which is the bonus(I think), it does not relax you hair.

The Pros
You can apply to the entire hair shaft every 6-8 weeks, not just new growth
You don't need gloves
It won't burn your scalp
Use on natural or processed hair
Can wear hair "curly or straight"

The Cons
Contains sodium sulphite (can cause dermatologic reactions)
Stinks (my kitchen smelled like a salon)
Costs about $30 (bought mine on sale $25)
Leaves a filmy feeling on hands (temporary)
Needs high heat to straighten nicely


I bought Kera Minerals by Silk Elements at Sally's Beauty Supply after hearing rave reviews from a co-worker. I used it on my daughter, unfortunately I heard about it a month after I tex-laxed my daughters all natural tresses. You will need to purchase the shampoo, deep conditioner and leave-in seperatly for future washings. The additional products also contain "Sericin", which helps to keep the hair silky and smooth through future washings.

Hello just writing to inform you that sodium oxide and sodium hydroxide are not the same thkng. Sodium oxide is nothing more than simple soda. Sodium hydroxide is caustic soda. It it like comparing water to 30 volume developer.

Thanks for the heads up, you are absolutely right. IDK if it was a typo or not, but the product actually contains SODIUM SULFITE which is an inorganic salt used to modify hair fibers to change the structure of the hair strand. So it is/may be used in hair dyes and to create permanent waves as well as in other products.

Okay, I have replaced the sodium oxide with the correct term SODIUM SULFITE, which is a food grade preservative used in products like red wine and crackers. It is metabolized in the body by sodium oxidase which turns it into SULFATE. Sulfate occurs naturally in water and other sources. Sodium sulfite is not irritating or sensitizing, but it can cause a reaction if you suffer from dermatologic conditions (eczema, psoriasis, allergy, etc. Some easy reading can be found here: http://dhss.delaware.gov/dph/files/sulfatefaq.pdf or simply search google for more info.

Long story short, KeraMinerals is not as harmful as a relaxer.

Water Only Washing......Beyond 30 days

After a warm/cold rinse More than a year ago, I decided to for go using traditional shampoos and conditioners. I started whipping up my own hair products with some success, but nothing to brag about. Now I always have an assortment of butters, oils and essential oils, not to mention aloe vera, distilled water and honey.
